Facts rebut Punjab govt’s claims related to List and Release of Sikh Political Prisoners

Ludhiana: The issue of Sikh political prisoners, especially the issue of permanent release of those Sikh political prisoners who have completed their mandatory jail terms, is once again in focus. Punjab government and various newspapers/media are maintaining that there were no Sikh prisoners in Indian jails who could be granted permanent release, especially in wake 2014 Supreme Court of India (SCI) stay on granting remissions to life term convicts.

Many newspapers have terms the list of Sikh political prisoners, issued by Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur, as a source of confusion. Government is repeatedly referring to this list and says that the list includes names of many undertrials against whom cases are pending in various courts therefore it (the govt.) can not release any of the prisoners included in the list. Government also maintains that imprisonment for life means imprisonment for entire remaining life of a convict.

Sikh Siyasat has talked to Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur about about all these questions. He told Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) that section 57 of Indian Penal Code defines imprisonment for life as imprisonment for 20 years.

He said that the facts related to the issue of Sikh political prisoners rebuts government’s claims.
