SCI Orders status quo on controversial SYL Canal; Issues Notice to Punjab on Haryana’s plea

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India (SCI) today issued notice to Punjab and the Centre on Haryana’s plea for construction of controversial Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal.

The court also sought a report from the Indian Home Secretary and Punjab Chief Secretary and Director General of Police on the status of the land acquired for the canal. Trio were appointed as receivers in an earlier decision by the SCI in March 2016.

A Bench comprising Justices PC Ghose and Amitava Roy posted the next hearing for December 15, asking Punjab and the Centre to file their response before that.

Haryana alleged that the Punjab government was violating SCI’s status quo order dating back to March 2016 by returning the land acquired for SYL to the farmers from whom it was acquired.

Haryana government wanted the SCI to appoint receivers to ensure the construction of controversial Satluj Yamuna Link canal. Punjab government’s counsel opposed Haryana’s argument and urged the court to issue notice to the Punjab government and allow it to file the reply.

After issuing notice to the Punjab government and the Central government of India the SCI posted the hearing of the case for December 15.
