Drugs in Punjab – a weapon to destroy political consciousness and fighting spirit of Youth: H S Dhami

Hoshiarpur, Punjab (February 01, 2014): Dal Khalsa president Bhai H S Dhami today stated that Punjab is in “octopus-like” grip of drugs & alcoholism and slammed the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) and the opposition Congress for resorting to unhealthy and unprincipled politics on the issue of punishing the drug mafia.
Bhai H S Dhami while addressing the seminar on the topic of “Drug abuse and Our Responsibilities” organized by Youth Club of village Harmohye said “the rise in drug abuse has threatened to consume the young generation, but the Akalis and Congressmen were unfortunately engaged in unhealthy politics over it”.

“We believe at one level, it was a part of the design to engage the Punjabi youth in drugs as a weapon to check their political consciousness and to counter the fighting spirit in them,” he said.
We all have interests, except the common interest, he said and added that Parents, teachers, doctors, policemen, politicians and religious leadership, all are responsible for not waking up to the occasion.
Bhagwant Mann, a senior leader of the Punjab People’s Party said the disclosure by kingpin Bhola was just tip of the iceberg. He said there was more to it than meets the eye. He said the Akali government has systematically scuttled the demand for CBI probe fearing that it could unearth more skeletons from the Akali cupboard. He said penetration of drug peddlers has reached the portals of power and the highest levels of administration.
Expressing his deep concern over the large-scale corruption in politics and rising drug abuse in Punjab, Noblejit Singh, head of Sikh Youth of Punjab called upon the people and especially youth to pool their efforts and energy in order to make Punjab a drug-free and corruption-free state. He said the Punjab government would have to do much more to curb this menace.
Former DGP (prisons) Shashi Kant, who was listed as one of the key speaker, could not turn up.
