New Delhi, India (February 14, 2014): As per information available with the Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) the Delhi government led by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today (Feb. 14) filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court of India opposing death penalty to Sikh political prisoner Professor Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar.
In its affidavit submitted to the SCI, the AAP government sought commuting bhullar’s death penalty on the grounds of his mental health.
The Delhi government’s reaction comes after the SC last month stayed execution of Professor Devender Pal Singh Bhullar and issued notice to the Government of India, besides the Delhi government on his petition seeking commuting his death penalty to life imprisonment.
The AAP leader and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal had already cleared the stand of his government on this issue as he had reportedly sent a recommendation for release of Professor Devender Pal Singh Bhullar, but today’s affidavit has attained more significance as according to recent information available with the Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) Arvind Kejriwal resigned as Delhi CM this evening.
The court had asked Delhi-based Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences to examine Bhullar and submit a report on his state of mental health within a week. The institute has reportedly submitted also submitted it’s report to the SCI.
The SCI is scheduled to hear this matter on February 19, 2014 in after-lunch session.
