YAD workers blocked road show of AAP’s Bhagwant Mann; ‘Warn’ him against slamming SS Dhindsa

Sangrur, Punjab (April 15, 2014): According to media reports some persons allegedly belonging to Youth Akali Dal (YAD), youth wing of ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal), blocked way of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Bhagwant Mann and warned him against slamming Badal Dal candidate. Bhagwant Mann, comedian- turned politician, is contesting from Sangrur Lok Sabha seat on Aam Aadmi Party’s ticket.

According to The Tribune [t]ension gripped Kammo Majra village, 5 km from here, when a group of 20 Youth Akali Dal (YAD) workers showed black flags to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Bhagwant Mann while he was touring villages.

According to Hindustan Times: Bhagwant Mann alleged that 10-15 workers of the Youth Akali Dal had blocked his way near Kammomajra village on the Sangrur-Siyana road, when he was going for the election campaign”

“Carrying black flags, they warned me not to slam SAD candidate during my election campaign and public meetings”, he alleged adding that: “After wait of more than one hour, I had to call the police, which dispersed them”

According to The Tribune (TT) [t]he YAD workers showed black flags to Mann for “speaking against” SAD candidate SS Dhindsa and his family at his election rallies. This led to an altercation between AAP and Akali workers.

Bhagwant and his supporters reportedly sat on a dharna and called the police. The AAP candidate accused the Badal Dal workers of disrupting his campaign. A police team, including a Superintendent of Police (SP), two Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) and two Station House Officers (SHOs), reached the site and reportedly detained five Akali workers.

But Sukhdev Singh Virk, Sunam DSP, denied the police had detained anybody.

He said five persons were taken away in a police vehicle but were let off 200 yards away.

He said no case had been registered as Bhagwant Mann had not filed a complaint.
