Sikh Genocide Conference held by Canadian Sikhs on 15 August

Ontario (August 15, 2010): Canadian Sikhs under the patronage of Shri Akal Takhat Sahib marked August 15th, Independence Day of India, as “Sikh Genocide” day. “Sikh Genocide” Conference was organized by Sikhs For Justice, a based human rights advocacy group, is spearheading an international justice awareness campaign and striving to disseminate true and correct information regarding the Genocide of Sikhs from 1984-1998 to the international community with the support of All India Sikh Students Federation.
Addressing the conference, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, legal advisor to “Sikhs For Justice” stated that during the upcoming UN General Assembly session in New York, their organization will present a memorandum to the UN highlighting the denial of justice in India to victims of Sikhs Genocide (1984-98); Continued human rights violations; and Indian Judiciary’s open collaboration in denial of justice to religious minorities of India, specially Sikhs. Attorney Pannun further stated that during upcoming UN general assembly session, SFJ will lobby that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should not be allowed to speak because of India’s despicable record on human rights. “Sikhs For Justice” will hold a “Justice Rally” outside UN Building in New York during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to UN. According to attorney Pannun, aim of the “Justice Rally” will be to educate the international community about the continuous denial of justice to victims of Sikh Genocide 1984-98.
Addressing the conference, Sukhminder Singh Hansra, known Canadian activist and journalist stated that on August 15, 1947 India won its freedom from British Empire with the help Sikhs but unfortunately, after independence Sikhs are made slaves of a system that kills and suppresses the religious minorities. “Sikhs For Justice” youth coordinator, Jatinder Singh Grewal, while addressing the gathering stressed that upholding Canadian values it’s imperative for the Canadian Political leaders to speak openly against the killings of Sikhs in India without considering the economic relations.
Hundreds of Canadian Sikhs attended the conference and pledged to support the “Sikhs For Justice” in “Justice Campaign” which includes:
a) To recognize killings of Sikhs (1984-98) as “Genocide” under Article 2 of the UN Convention on Genocide.
b) To demand the prosecution of Sikh Genocide (1984-98) perpetrators and organizers;
c) To get Sikhism recognized as a separate religion under the Indian Constitution.
“Sikhs For Justice” presented the documentary based on the evidence collected with the help of All India Sikh Student Federation, showing the victims and witnesses of November 1984 Sikh Genocide from all across India. The evidence and testimonies in the documentary clearly establish that in November 1984 Sikhs were systematically attacked and killed in at least 18 states of India.
The conference was organized with the help and support of Ontario Gurdwara Committee, Ontario Sikhs and Gurdwara Council, United Front of Sikhs, Shiromani Akali Dal (Panch Pardani) and management of all Gurdwara Sahibs of Ontario, Montreal, Ottawa, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Surrey, and Abbottsford.
