Amritsar, Punjab: The Sikh Youth of Punjab (SYP) has decided to organize a youth rally against drug menace, criminalization of politics, crime against women and vulgarity in culture at Amritsar on Oct 7.

The youth body has resolved to adopt a pro-active approach to create mass awareness against drug abuse and other social evils that has plagued the society so badly, said Nobeljit Singh, head of SYP, which is youth wing of the Dal Khalsa in a meeting held here today. He said the synthetic drug manufactured locally is taking more toll on youth.

Expressing grief over the loss of precious lives, the meeting mourned the deaths of people of Jammu and Kashmir in the worst natural disaster. It lauded the role of the SGPC and Khalsa Aid and many others in extending all forms of support and relief to the victims.

While addressing the meet, Dal Khalsa spokesperson Kanwar Pal Singh said they were in touch with representatives of Kashmir groups and they had informed us that the affected persons were in need of blankets and woolen clothes. He urged the people at large and Sikh Diaspora to come forward to provide relief material to the populace of the valley. He said it has been decided that their representatives will visit the J&K once the water will recede.

Commenting on Punjab government’s post-poll drive to tackle the drug menace, Kanwar Pal Singh said it’s forgotten chapter now. Without yielding any desired result, the hype has lost its steam”.

The state government has arrested hundreds of addicts, mostly youth, while the police arrest consumers, none of the big suppliers or producers have fallen in their net”, said he.

Failing to handle the menace, he said the Chief Minister and deputy chief minister was passing the buck by simply saying the drug inflow in Punjab is from Pakistan. “The drug cartel cannot be operated without the connivance of politicians and the police. The non-seriousness of the Punjab government to curb the drug abuse is reflected from the statement of the deputy CM, when he denied any patronage extended to the illicit drug trade by politicians in Punjab”.
