Punjab: Opposition parties up in arms against staged encounter of AAP activists

Samrala, Punjab: The cold blooded murder of two young brothers of a Dalit family by Punjab police in complicity with a SAD (Badal) leader has triggered widespread outrage against Badal-BJP ruling combine in Punjab. Various political parties, including the Punjab Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Left sections, BSP, People’s Party of Punjab (PPP) and Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) have joined hands to protest the killing of two youths.

The leaders of various parties held a peaceful march in Samrala on October 02 and demanded proper inquiry in this matter, however, there were diverse opinion about the form of inquiry. Congress party demanded inquiry by sitting High Court judge, while the Aam Aadmi Party is demanding CBI inquiry into this matter.
Demanding the resignation of Home Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Partap Singh Bajwa accused the police of acting as the private militia of the Akali Dal.
Urging for an “exemplary punishment” to those found guilty of killing the Dalit brothers, Harinder Singh and Jatinder Singh, the PPCC chief said: “This is a case of cold-blooded murders. The conspiracy behind the killings, apparently in which money has exchanged hands, should be exposed.” The Congress leader accused the Akali Dal-led state government of misusing the police force for furthering its political ends.

Congress state president demanded a time-bound inquiry by a sitting High Court Judge.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Bhagwant Mann demanded a CBI inquiry into the case. He said the case should be fast-tracked.
“The Khanna police that had swung into action immediately in the shoe-hurling case at Issru is dragging its feet in the Jamalpur killings case,” said Bhagwant Mann. He said AAP had submitted a memorandum to the Governor on the issue.
The AAP leader said even if the youths had pending cases against them, the Badal Dal leader had no right to kill them. The law would have taken its course.
Bhagwant Mann said that the recently put up posters in Samrala, showing the murdered youths in a bad light, reveal that there was a strong lobby that wanted to protect the accused.
