December 6, 2014 | By

New Delhi, India: A press release by Amnesty International India says six students from Bangalore shared their views on bullying in schools with the India’s Minister of Human Resource Development Smriti Irani in New Delhi on 5 December 2014 at a round table organised by Amnesty International India with the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

The round table was part of the #BullyNoMore campaign by the Human Rights Education (HRE) programme of Amnesty International India. It aims to create awareness on how bullying is a human rights abuse which denies a child the right to dignity, respect and inclusion.

Designed as a platform to share voices from the ground directly with policy and decision-makers, the round table gave the students an opportunity to narrate their personal experiences with bullying and the ways adopted by their schools to tackle the problem. They also shared pictures of the various activities carried out in their respective schools to make them more human rights friendly.

The #BullyNoMore campaign is an attempt to showcase the seriousness and pervasiveness of the issue of bullying across schools, whether private or government schools. With an aim to amplify the voices of children on the issue, Amnesty International India has received videos and audio recordings of solutions to bullying from students across the country. The programme also offers a free module entitled “No Tolerance to Bullying” to address and curb bullying in schools.

Shashikumar Velath, Deputy Chief Executive at Amnesty International India said, “Bullying is widespread in schools across India, both private and government-run, across the economic spectrum. What is alarming is that bullying is considered a childhood norm or rite of passage, rather than a denial of a child’s right to dignity, respect and inclusion. This is something that needs to change, and it requires all members of the school community – parents, teachers, school management and students – to work together to effectively curb bullying both in schools and outside.”

Amnesty International India’s Human Rights Education programme:

Amnesty International India’s Human Rights Education programme works with schools to make human rights a part of daily school life, in which every member of the school community comes together with the shared responsibility to ensure a Human Rights Friendly School Life. Through a ‘Whole-School Approach’ that focuses on four key areas – Curriculum, Environment, Relationships and Governance, the programme aims to sow the seeds of a rights respecting society in schools – whether private or government – and nurture its growth.
