Ambala, Haryana: For the past few days there are reports in Punjabi print media that the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) may favorably consider the cases of some of Sikh political prisoners whose release is being demanded by Sikh activist Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa. Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa has been on indefinite hunger strike since November 14, 2014 at Gurdwara Lakhnaur Sahib near Ambala, Haryana.
News reports published by Daily Ajit during past two-three days, a prominent Punjabi vernacular published from Jalandhar, maintained that the Bhartiya Janta Party is considering the cases of Sikh political prisoners for granting ‘premature’/permanent release.
Bhartiya Kisan Morcha General Secretary Sukhminder Singh Grewal claimed that the government may soon announce to grant premature release to two Sikh political prisoners namely Bhai Lala Singh (currently confined in Maximum Security Jail, Nabha) and Bhai Wariam Singh (Currently confined in Bans-Bareli Jail in UP). He added that the BJP is also considering cases of other five Sikh political prisoners for permanent release.
Bhai Wariam Singh’s son Jaswinder Singh confirmed that the jail administration has demanded documents related to his father’s case which shows that some sort of process in taking place in his case.
It is notable that Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa is seeking permanent release of 7 Sikh political prisoners who have completed minimum mandatory terms of their sentences and their permanent release depends upon political will of the appropriate (center/ state/ both) government/s. It may be recalled that there are 17 Sikh political prisoners in Indian jails who have completed terms of their sentences but Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa says that he is demanding release of only seven Sikh prisoners namely – Bhai Lakhwinder Singh, Bhai Shamsher Singh, Bhai Gurmit Singh (all in Burail Jail, Chandigarh), Bhai Lal Singh (Maximum Security Jail, Nabha), Bhai Wariam Singh (Bans-Bareli Jail, UP), Bhai Gurdeep Singh Khaira (Gulberga Jail, Karnataka) and Prof Devenderpal Singh Bhullar (Tihar Jail, Delhi).
