Thailand: Authorities in Thailand have arrested Jagtar Singh Tara who had escaped from Chandigarh Model Jail, Burrail in 2004.
Media reports says ‘Gurmeet Singh, who is also known as Jagtar Sigh Tara was arrested by Thailand authorities on Monday.
“Singh, also known as Jagtar Singh Tara, entered Thailand in October and was arrested Monday in the eastern province of Chonburi”, Thai National police spokesman Lt. Gen. Prawut Thawornsiri said.
“It took quite some time to arrest him. We had been following him for a while, but at one point he slipped off the radar,” he said.
Prawut said Jagtar Singh Tara, 37, faces extradition to India.
At the time of jail break in 2004 Jagtar Singh Tara was facing trial in 1995 assasination of Punjab chief minister Beant Singh.
Punjab CM Beant Singh had unleashed region of state-terror on civilian Sikh population after assuming office in 1992. The period of 1992-95 was marred by mass level atrocities on the civilian Sikh population when thousands were subjected to enforced disappearances, killed in fake/ staged encounters and were cremated as “unclaimed dead bodies”.
CM Beant Singh had but the existence of the Sikhs, especially the youth sections, under threat. He was assassinated out of existential concerns. Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara and Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana were granted death sentences in this case. Bhai Hawara’s death sentence was turned in to imprisonment for life (till death) by Punjab and Haryana High Court, while Balwant Singh Rajoana is still facing death sentence. On the other hand CBI has appealed to the Supreme Court of India to restore death sentence against Jagtar Singh Hawara.
