DGP Sumedh Saini comes to defense of Badals; Says ‘No case for early release in Punjab’

Chandigarh: Punjab DGP Sumedh Siani has come to the defense of Badal government in Punjab saying that there were no pending cases of premature release of life term convicts in Punjab. It is notable that Punjab government is under pressure to grant premature release to Sikh political prisoners who are eligible to get ‘premature release’ as Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa’s hunger strike completed 55th on January 07.

Punjab Director General of Police Sumedh Saini today said there was no way to release any convict who is undergoing life term following a Supreme Court order in July 2014. He said there was no convict in Punjab who can be released as of now.

Sumedh Saini, while addressing a press conference, cited a Supreme Court interim direction — in the Union of India v/s Sriharan alias Murgan and others — to assert that no convict could be released prematurely by any state government.

He said the matter had been examined at the government level and it was decided to move an application before the SC for an early decision.

“There was no convict (for any kind of crime) who was in a state jail after completion of his sentence. No one can keep a person in the jail after the sentence is over,” he said.

It is notable that in an open letter to Punjab CM Parksh Singh Badal, Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur had identified at least four cases of Sikh political prisoners who are awaiting premature release. Advocate Manjhpur had clarified that these cases falls with in complete jurisdiction of Punjab government.
