New Delhi: As per media reports, pro-freedom Kashmiri leaders have been put under house arrest by Indian authorities in order to prevent their meeting with Pakistan’s National Security Advisor (NSA).
Senior leaders Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Yasin Malik, Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Moulvi Abbas Ansari were placed under house arrest in the morning just three days ahead of the Pakistan NSA’s visit to India for talks, notes a report by Hindustan Times (HT).
Indian authorities have put up stop gates outside their house besides deploying police personnel. The pro-freedom leaders were also in informed that they should not step outside their houses.
Notably, Pak NSA Sartaaj Aziz is set to meet his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval in Delhi on August 23. Yesterday, pro-freedom Kashmiri leaders had confirmed that they have been invited by Pak NSA for a meeting that was to held before Sartaaj Aziz’s meeting with Indian NSA.
It may be recalled that in August 2014 India had unilaterally cancelled Foreign Secretary level talks with Pakistan after Pakistan had invited Kashmiri leader for a meeting before meeting Indian authorities.
The negotiations remained stuck for many months till Indian Prime Minister met his Pakistani counterpart in July in Ufa, Russia and both neighbours decided to hold National Security Advisor (NSA) level talks in August.
After Pak NSA extended meeting invitation to pro-freedom Kashmiri leaders yesterday, the Indian authorities declared that India will head with NSA level talks. Indian authorites, however, had signalled action against Kashmiri leaders.
