Brampton’s Sikh Heritage Centre Gurdwara damaged by fire

February 10, 2016 | By

Brampton: The Sikh Heritage Centre, a small gurdwara in the north end of Brampton, has been heavily damaged by a fire that broke out early Monday (Feb. 08)  morning.

Brampton fire responded with seven trucks to the Sikh Heritage Centre at 11796 Airport Rd., just south of Mayfield Road, around 3 a.m. There was heavy smoke at the rear of the property and fire crews encountered flames upon arrival.

A quick and aggressive attack inside the building was used and the blaze was extinguished quickly, according to fire officials.

There were no injuries reported and the cause of the fire, as well as the extent of damage, is not yet known. Fire investigators will be examining the scene to determine how it started.

Sherdaljit [Singh] Dhillon, secretary for the Sikh Heritage Centre, said members of the organization are not able to get inside the building until fire officials have completed their investigation. He said he could not discuss the fire until the damage can be assessed and the organization’s insurance company has been consulted.

The 13-year-old centre is a registered charity and hosts daily prayers, services and celebrates Sikh religious events.
