New Delhi: Days after being appointed as Punjab affairs in-charge, Congress leader Kamal Nath today (June 15) resigned from the post. As per media reports Kamal Nath has written to party president Sonia Gandhi, requesting her to relieve him from the position as in-charge of party’s affairs in Punjab after his appointment drew strong reactions from various sections.
Kamal Nath reportedly termed the criticism as “unnecessary controversy”.
According to Indian Express (IE), Congress spokesman Randip Surjewala confirmed Kamal Nath’s resignation and said the party president has accepted it.
Notably Kamal Nath is suspected for his role in instigating genocidal violence against Sikhs in Delhi in November 1984. He faces allegations of leading a mob near Gurdwara Rakabganj in Delhi during the Sikh genocide of 1984.
Kamal Nath’s move came a day after Punjab Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh had defended Kamal Nath’s appointment while terming him to be a ‘nobel and good’ man.
Thirty Years of Impunity and denial of Justice
It is notable that high ups in the Congress party and the Indian administration perpetrated the Sikh genocidal violence against the Sikhs in November 1984, in which thousands of Sikhs were massacred throughout India. Culprits of the genocidal massacres of Nov. 1984 have enjoyed impunity and high political posts during past three decades where as the victims of the massacre were left to perish as the justice was blatantly denied in these cases.
