Amritsar: Eight police personnel were booked on July 7 for ‘staging’ an encounter in Amritsar in June 2015 in which  Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) leader Mukhjit Singh Mukha was shot dead by the police.

Amritsar Police Commissioner Amar Singh Chahal said that the accused have been charged for culpable homicide not amounting to murder (section 304 of the Indian Penal Code, 1872). He said that the accused, including Sub-Inspector Ramesh Kumar, in charge of the anti-narcotic cell at that time, ASI Joginder Singh, Head Constables Ranbir Singh, Rajesh Kumar, Jasbir Singh, Sandeep Kumar and Navjot Singh and Constable Satwinderjit Singh, would be arrested soon.

As per media reports, the case was registered on the recommendations of a Special Investigating Team (SIT) constituted to probe the murder.

Notably, Mukhjit Mukha was shot near Mudhal village on June 16, 2015, when a police party was searching for notorious Gurdaspur gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpurian.

Forensic teams that visited the “encounter” site said they had found no evidence to suggest that Mukha had fired at the police team.
