Chandigarh: A trial in the case related to execution of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh resumed at Burail jail on Thursday (Feb. 23) with the recording of the statements of CBI SSP Randhir Singh Punia. Notably, an Indian court is holding trial of Sikh political prisoner Bhai Jagtar Singh Tara in connection with execution of Punjab CM Beant Singh who was executed by Bhai Dilawar Singh and others on August 31, 1995.
It is notable that Punjab CM Beant Singh had unleashed region of state-terror on civilian Sikh population after assuming office in 1992. The period of 1992-95 was marred by mass level atrocities on the civilian Sikh population when thousands were subjected to enforced disappearances, killed in fake/ staged encounters and were cremated as “unclaimed dead bodies”. Assassination of CM Beant Singh was a political act arising out of existential concerns of the Sikh panth.
Hearing of trial against Bhai Jagtar Singh Tara was held by the court of additional sessions judge J S Sidhu, where SSP Randhir Singh Punia stated that during the disclosure statement accused Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana had revealed that he, along with Dilawar Singh and Jagtar Singh Hawara, had planned to execute the former CM.
He also stated that Bhai Jagtar Singh Rajoana had stated in his disclosure statement that they purchased belts for bomb from a shop and it was stitched at another place. As per SSP’s statement Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana had also told that four police uniforms were bought from Tripuri in Patiala.
Meanwhile, the application of Bhai Jagtar Singh Tara for the release of the Pakistan currency seized from him was dismissed by the court.
