Chandigarh: As per the media reports the state government has deferred the decision on whether to covert the government quota MBBS seats at Sri Guru Ram Das Medical College (SGRDC), into management quota for the time being. The decision on this issue was suppose to be taken by Wednesday.
Punjab’s director public instructions (DPI) Colleges Harjit Singh chaired the six-hour meeting at his office in Sector 17, Chandigarh. At the meeting, representatives from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC)-run institute presented detailed rules and regulations that it will follow if given the status of a medical university, a mandatory requirement before the quota of seats can be changed, reads a quote from a report published in Hindustan Times (HT).
It is said that SGRD has 150 seats, with 75 in the government (general) quota and 75 in the management/minority quota. Tuition fee for the government seats is around Rs 10 lakhs whereas the fee for the management quota seat is four times the government seat that is around Rs 40 lakhs.
The conclusion to defers the decision may adversely effect the counseling of the registered medical candidates which is due on July 17. In case, no decision is taken on the matter, then students will fill their preference of college according to the current division of seats in the institute, media sources said.
“The rules that govern the setting up of medical university needed to be studied carefully. There was not enough time to take an immediate decision and approve the relevant rules. One approved, the rules cannot be changed for five years,” a senior official from Punjab education department reportedly said.
The management quota also has 11 seats reserved for NRIs.
