What Parkash Singh Badal’s Statement Denying Ordering Behbal Kalan Firing Reveals?

Chandigarh: Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) patron Parkash Singh Badal yesterday (Sept. 1) issued a written statement on his party’s “verified” Facebook page denying that he had ordered police firing at Behbal Kalan.

Before coming to the statement itself, it is pertinent to note here that the statement is issued in wake of the fact the the final report submitted by Justice Ranjit Singh Commission carries statement of former DGP Sumedh Saini which reveals that the then CM Parkash Singh Badal had talked to Sumedh Saini at around 2 am on October 14, 2015. The Ex-DGP said that the then CM was briefed about the steps being taken regarding the situation.

“At about 2 am the then Chief Minister Sh. Parkash Singh Badal rung up regarding the situation and the steps being then, since the issue at Kotkapura was of State concern”, Sumedh Saini said in his reply filed before the commission, a copy of which was annexed to supplementary report submitted by Justice Ranjit Singh Commission.

The statement issued by Pakash Singh Badal yesterday is in Punjabi/Gurmukhi.

Its first line reads: “I did not order firing at Behbal Kalan” (Behbal Kalan vich goli chalaun de main kade koi aadesh nahin ditte“).

This is the only line in the entire statement that is related to the issue. Rest of the statement is a propaganda piece.

Known for his silence, the former CM’s statement denying his role in Behbal Kalan police firing reveals his concerns. SAD (B) may have been maintaining that it does not recognise Justice Ranjit Singh Commission or its report, but the statement shows that they know if the Congress government decides to act on it, it could turn a fatal blow for this party.

It also shows that the former CM does not have much to say in this regard that’s why after writing the first line he shifted the topic and started arguing that even Congress leadership was not well-wisher of the Sikhs.

In next paragraph he is basically complaining about cheap terms used for him by the Congress leadership during August 28 debate but in next line in the same paragraph he used equally cheep terms in return.

In next line he pleaded that he was better than the Congress leadership because he spent some time in jail while Congress leaders did not.

He wanted to exonerate himself of his ill-deeds by arguing that even others (Congress leadership) too did similar things.

The statement shows that even at the last stage of his life, Parkash Singh Badal has purely worldly concerns and is attempting to save the image of his party to enable his heirs to stay on the path that leads to political power but at same time it reveals that he has no fact or convincing argument on his side which could negate his guilt that is established in report submitted by Justice Ranjit Singh Commission.
