CBI to file appeal against acquittal of Sajjan Kumar in Delhi High Court

New Delhi, India (May 08, 2013): It is learnt that the CBI will challenge before Delhi high court the acquittal of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a November 1984 Sikh massacre case by a trial court as it has found “strong grounds” which could form basis of its petition.

According to media reports the CBI sources said on May 07, 2013 that the agency is likely to wait till the court pronounces its verdict on the quantum of sentence for those found guilty in the case.

It is notable that Delhi’s District and sessions judge J R Aryan had on April 30, 2013 acquitted Indian politician and Congress party leader Sajjan Kumar in the 29-year-old case in which he was accused of murder and of instigating the massacre of Sikhs in Delhi’s cantonment area.

Five others — Balwan Khokkar, an ex-councillor, Mahender Yadav, an ex-MLA, Kishan Khokkar, Girdhari Lal and Captain Bhagmal — were convicted for their involvement in the massacre.

As per CBI strong legal basis are present for challenging the acquittal of Sajjan Kumar in the High Court.
