Ontario, Canada (September 16, 2013): It is generally believed it’s unlikely to be mere coincidence, Minister of Employment, Social Development & Multiculturalism Jason Kenney has changed his Twitter photo to one of him wearing a headcover/headscarf with “Khanda”, a Sikh symbol.
Canadian Minister’s new profile photo shows the minister in front of the Darbar Sahib in Amritsar, Punjab during a visit last January.
The photo change came along with a tweet in support of Quebec MP Maria Mourani, who was booted from the Bloc Quebecois caucus for speaking out against the charter of values.
The proposed charter of values, if made law, would ban public sector workers in Quebec from wearing “overt” religious symbols at work such as hijabs, niqabs, kippas, turbans or the scarf Kenney is wearing in the photos above.
Soon after the charter was revealed, Kenney expressed concern on behalf of the federal government.
“At the federal level, we believe our job is to make all people who live in this country — regardless of their religious, ethnic, cultural background – feel welcome, feel part of our country, feel like this is a land of equality of opportunity,” said Kenney.
He also said the government would fight the charter if it’s found unconstitutional.
“If it’s determined that a prospective law violates the constitutional protections for freedom of religion to which all Canadians are entitled, we will defend those rights vigorously,” he said.
