Sikh Massacre 1984: Indian court begins trial against politician Sajjan Kumar

New Delhi, India (January 11, 2013): As per information the trial in a November 1984 Sikh massacre case against Indian politician of Congress Party- Sajjan Kumar and others began in a Delhi court in New Delhi on January 10.
The statement of prosecution witness and at present private secretary of Lt. Governor of Delhi, Vishwendra, was recorded before Karkardooma’s district judge J. R. Aryan.

Vishwendra was then deputy secretary in the home ministry when the sanction was given to prosecute the accused in the case.
Testifying, Vishwendra identified his signatures on the documents relating to sanction and said he had no personal knowledge about them.
The court directed Vishwendra to bring on record to show the case was sent to Lt. Governor of Delhi seeking sanction to prosecute the accused and fixed the matter for Jan 15.
The court had earlier framed various charges, including murder and rioting, against Sajjan Kumar, Brahmanand Gupta, Peru, Khushal Singh (now deceased) and Ved Prakash in connection with the killing of a man in the Sultanpuri area of the India’s capital city Delhi in the mass violance against Sikhs during first week of November 1984.
Notably, Indian courts took three decades to begin the trial.
The culprits of Sikh genocide of November 1984 have enjoyed state patronage and blind impunity has prevailed in these cases.
I is notable here that genocide is not recognized as a punishable crime under Indian law and the trials relating to Sikh genocide 1984 are taking place under ordinary criminal law (Indian Penal Code) for murder and other offences.
