Sangrur/ Delhi, Punjab/ India (March 24, 2013): According to some media reports a Sikh named Manpreet Singh, who had reportedly left India in 1999 while, has been arrested at Delhi airport on March 23, 2013. The arrest has been reportedly made by the Punjab police.
As per media reports Manpreet Singh was a member of All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF). He was booked under TADA in 1987.
He was reportedly arrested on March 23, 2013 soon after he landed at the airport in the Delhi on a flight from Sydney. Various media sections have reported that Manpreet Singh was arrested on a tip off.
It is learnt that Punjab police brought Manpreet Singh to Sangrur and produced him in a local court on March 24, 2013.
The court reportedly remanded Manpreet Singh to police custody a day.
SHO Sangrur Harinder Singh said Mapreet Singh was booked under TADA for alleged seditious activities and masterminding jail break along with other militants in high security Sangrur prison.
SHO Harinder Singh further alleged that Manpreet Singh along with other militants had attempted to murder the jail superintendent and a couple of militants lost their lives in police firing on jail premises.
Manpreet Singh was released on bail by a court on May 27, 1999 during pendency of his trial under various offences.
As per media reports Manpreet Singh had allegedly managed to flee to New Zealand in 1999 and was declared a proclaimed offender.
The SHO said that the militant was brought by police party last night. He said that the police would seek extension of his remand tomorrow to ascertain whether he had any alleged militant links abroad.
