As per Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC) [a]t present, the Akal Takht Secretariat doesn’t have adequate space for visitors. It has a room for the Secretariat staff and a hall where the Sikh high priests hold their meetings. Apart from it there is a hall in the basement.

Due to the lack of space, the visitors have to sit outside during the Sikh Jathedar’s meeting. The existing premises don’t even have a designated space to keep the records.

According to The Tribune (TT): Akal Takht Jathedar’s personal assistant Jaswinder Singh said the ‘kar sewa’ for the new premises was likely to start from February 20 and it would be completed in a span of three months. The entire area will be air-conditioned and equipped with a Wi-Fi facility.

He said two more adjacent rooms would be included in the secretariat. The new secretariat will have a hall, where the visitors can meet the Jathedar apart from another hall for the secretariat staff. Besides, there will be separate areas for facilitating the Sikh clergy meet and press conferences. There will also be a kitchen and a toilet.

A Mumbai-based architect prepared the map of the new Akal Takht Secretariat. SGPC Chief Avtar Singh Makkar said it was an appreciable move and it would add to the convenience of the visitors.

Meanwhile, former SGPC general secretary Bibi Kiranjot Kaur felt that there wasn’t a requirement of a huge paraphernalia for the Akal Takht Secretariat. “The Secretariat should have a facility where the Akal Takth Jathedar can entertain the visiting dignitaries. Besides, it should have computerised record facility and Internet access so as to keep the record of correspondence.”
