Srinagar: As per the media reports several areas in Jammu and Kashmir, including capital city Srinagar, witnessed violence on the morning of Eid today, in which 10 people were reported to have been injured.
After offering the morning Eid prayer at the Eidgah a large ground for community prayer in downtown area of Srinagar the protesters and personnels of the J&K police clashed with each other. The police used tear gas on the protesters, who were throwing stones at them. The crowd dispersed after nearly 20 minutes.
The state has been witnessing violence in the run up to Eid, earlier last week a a deputy Superintendent of Police, Mohammad Ayub Pandith was beaten to death by a mob of around 200 people outside the Jama Masjid in Srinagar. The officer — who was on security duty outside the mosque — had sent his colleagues home to break their fasts, and was alone at the spot, said the media report.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police have asked its personnel to avoid Eid prayers in public places after the killing of the officer.
