Amrinder Singh poses questions over Parkash S. Badal’s role regarding the tragic events of June 1984

Chandigarh/ Punjab (February 12, 2014): Events related to infamous “Operation Blue Star” or the June 1984 attack on Harmandar Sahib (Amritsar) is once again in discussion but from a different perspective. A war of words is going on between former Punjab CM & Congress party leader Amrinder Singh and current CM & Badal Dal patron Parkash Singh Badal.

It is learnt that former Punjab CM Surjit Singh Barnala’s book ‘Quest for Freedom’ has stated that he (Barnala) and Parkash Singh Badal were arrested from their respective houses on June 10, 1984. They were subsequently flown to Bhopal in a BSF airplane to be finally lodged in comfortable guest houses and tourist huts at Panchmari, a small hill station in Madhya Pradesh.”

Congress Party’s Punjab spokesperson Sukhpal Singh Khaira released some photographs of Parksh Singh Badal attending some “shagun” function and said: “Badal had attended the ‘shagun’ ceremony of Pirthi Singh son of Jathedar Roop Singh at their residence in Gurhi Sanghar village (Gidderbaha) on June 3, 1984. Badal can be seen addressing a gathering in one of the photos while in some he was seated beside his brother Gurdas Badal and Dr Kehar Singh Sidhu, a freedom fighter from Muktsar”.

“While hundreds of Sikh youth sacrificed their lives during the years of turmoil on incitement by Akali leaders, Badal conveniently chose to send his son Sukhbir Badal to the US on the pretext of education,” he reportedly added.

Similarly Congress party leader Captain Amrinder Singh accused Parkash Singh Badal for being coward who always escaped tough situations. Amrinder Singh said that Badal escaped his arrest during June 1984. He claimed that Parkash Singh Badal had held a secret meeting alone with central minister before June 1984 attack on Darbar Sahib, and he knew about the attack therefore he deliberately stayed away from the Darbar Sahib complex.

Amrinder Singh has said that it’s a false claim by Parkash Singh Badal that he had spent 16 years in prison.

Badal has not spent more than five year in prison – actually of these five years he spent only one and a half year in jail and rest in government guest houses, Amrinder Singh reportedly told certain media-persons during a press conference recently held at Chandigarh.

He said that Badal should clarify about his meeting with a central minister few days before June 1984 as people want to clear the air on this issue.

On the other hand Parkash Singh Badal has accused Amrinder Singh of being a stooge of anti-Sikh congress party that attacked Harmandar Sahib and orchestrated massacre of Sikhs in November 1984.

These statements have once again put Shiromani Akali Dal Badal’s leadership’s role before or during June 1984 under question.
