Amit Shah declared new president of BJP; Shah was recently exonerated by CBI in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case

New Delhi, India (July 09, 2014): India’s ruling Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) general secretary Amit Shah has been declared as the new party president on Wednesday (July 09).

India’s Home minister Rajnath Singh announced in a news conference that he was stepping down as the BJP president and declared Shah as his successor.

Addressing a news conference, Rajnath Singh lauded Amit Shah’s “management skills” and credited him with the BJP’s success in Lok Sabha election in Uttar Pradesh.

Senior party leaders, in consultation with Hindu supremacist body Rashtirya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) leadership, had cleared Shah’s name as Singh’s replacement. RSS is considered to be ideological fountain head of BJP.

A meeting of the BJP parliamentary board was convened to ratify the decision.

It is notable that Amit Shah’s name for the post was in doubt initially considering the cases against him that dates back to his stint as the minister of state (home) while Narendra Modi was the chief minister of Gujarat.

According to media reports party insiders are confident that Shah will be able to secure a clean chit from the special CBI court in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh, Kausar Bi and Tulsi Prajapati fake encounter case.

The Supreme Court had clubbed the three cases in which CBI has framed murder charges against Shah.

The CBI has already exonerated him in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case.
