Hoshiarpur, Punjab (September 08, 2013): Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal’s zero tolerance to drugs has surprised many in the state as Sikh organizations were skeptical whether Sukhbir’s issuance of strict administrative measures to combat the drug menace was out of genuine concern or just mere statement in view of election year.
Dal Khalsa’s youth wing, the Sikh Youth of Punjab (SYP) has termed Deputy CM’s initiation to counter the drug menace as good news. However, the youth organization is of the view that much more has to be done to make ‘Punjab a drug-free state’.
Pertinently, Sukhbir has issued warning to the state police that cops found colluding with drug peddlers or smugglers would straightaway lose their jobs.
The SYP has launched a drive through public functions including marches organized in various districts against social evils especially drug menace, apostasy and sexual violence against women. The meeting of the office bearers of the SYP was held to chalk out the next programme. To awaken the youngsters against these social evils, the meeting decided to organize a Youth Convention in Amritsar on Oct 7.
Issuing a statement to the media, the president and vice-president of the organization, Ranbir Singh and Paramjit Singh said the step initiated by the Deputy CM was need of the hour as the drug menace has reached an alarming position in the state threatening to ruin the future of the coming generation.
They said identifying and punishing the black sheep in the police force, who indulge in drug trafficking, requires strong political will. “The people of Punjab will eagerly watch how Sukhbir ensures that his strict measures don’t turn out to be a damp squib”. General Secretary of the body Manjit Singh said penetration of drug peddlers has reached the portals of power and the highest levels of administration.
The meeting adopted the resolution urging the Punjab government to ensure strict observance of anti-drug abuse and trafficking laws. Giving a clarion call to one and all to wake up to the occasion, the resolution reads, “Each section of society has to take practical and effective steps so as to get rid from all kinds of tobacco and drug abuse”.
