New Delhi, India: While welcoming the Government of India’s decision to give Rs five lakh each to next of kin of 3,325 victims of November 1984 Sikh carnage Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal demanded setting up of a Special Investigative Team (SIT) to ensure a thorough probe into the cases.
AAP leader and former chief minister of Delhi said his government had announced setting up of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the cases but a notification instituting the probe is yet to be issued.
It is notable that going with the lines drawn by the (so-called) mainstram of India, Arvind Kejriwal also terms the 1984 genocidal massacres of Sikhs as “riots”.
“Compensation for 1984 riots victims is a good step. But it is important they get justice. AAP government announced SIT. Government should notify it now,” Arvind Kejriwal posted on micro-blogging website Twitter.
It is notable that in February 2014 Arvind Kejriwal government in Delhi had recommended to the Lt Governor the setting up of an SIT to probe the November 1984 violance against Sikhs with a time frame of one year to submit its report.
The effectiveness of any SIT is under question as thirty years have already passed since the massacre of Sikhs and 11 commissions and committees formed by various Indian government to ‘inquire’ into the Sikh carnage of 1984 have failed to deliver justice to the victims.
