Connecticut: The city of Norwich in New London county has become first city in America to recognise Punjabi Gurumukhi language of the Sikhs. It placed welcome Signs at Norwich entrance from Exit 29 of RT-2 near Backus Hospital and Exit 80 (New Exit 11) at West Main Street on Request of Norwich Resident Swaranjit Singh Khalsa.
The idea behind this move was to make the citizens of Norwich should feel connected to the city in one way or other so Swaranjit Singh came up with the idea of Welcome Sign.
The welcome signs includes 6 other languages along with Punjabi.
While speaking with the local media he told that Punjabi is also considered as Sikhs native language and that “Je Aayan Nu” means Welcome in Punjabi language which is spoken by 130 million people all around the Globe.
It was reported that the design and the cost of making the sign board was borne by the local Sikhs of the city, it was done to show people of Norwich that City is open to everyone and finally City officials were on board with this.”
