Chandigarh/ Punjab (October 26, 2013): Punjab Pardesh Congress Committee (PPCC) spokesperson Nimisha Mehta has criticized Badal Dal MP from Bathidna Harsimrat Badal for her interview with NDTV in which Harsimrat had passed certain strong comments in reaction to Rahul Gandhi’s speech at Rajasthan election rally (Oct. 23). In his speech Rahul Gandhi had mentioned certain events related to the assasination of his grandmother and former Prime minister of India, Indira Gandhi, who had ordered attack on Darbar Sahib (Amritsar) besides other Sikh Gurdwaras in June 1984. She was assassinated by two Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984.
In a brief interview with NDTV Harsimrat Badal had said: “[i]t was there for anybody to tell you that the entire youth of Punjab was wiped out in the name of terrorism. What was Mr Gandhi thinking? What was Mrs Gandhi doing at that time when she was killing other people’s sons and husbands?… a place of worship which is worshipped by every Sikh…she goes, gives orders to demolish that place and kill people there. What did she think? She would get away with it scot- free?”.
Punjab Congress spokesperson Nimisha Mehta has said that “Badal bahu (daughter in law) is capable of nothing but giving venomous speeches full of hatred”.
As per Indian Express, Nimisha Mehta while criticizing Harsimrat Badal in strong words, said: … it seems that development is not even on Harsimrat’s mind as she only wants to talk of unfortunate events of 1984. By regularly giving hate speeches and recalling the bloodshed of the ‘dark days’, Harsimrat is doing nothing but merely re-opening the wounds of those who were affected either directly or indirectly by the carnage”.
“Such statements are aimed at instigating communal disturbances, that is bound to hamper the peace and harmony of the state”, Mehta reportedly added.
Nimisha Mehta further said that: [i]f the Badal Clan – particularly Harsimrat – is so concerned about the welfares of the community then why don’t they pay any visit to the mandis where the farmers are sitting for last 25 days waiting for their paddy to be lifted.
Meanwhile BJP leader Lakshmi Kanta Chawla has reacted to Harsimrat’s statement by saying that such statements would demoralize Indian security forces.
