Dal Khalsa claims to hold Panthic assembly to do “postmortem” of SGPC’s performance on Dec 3

Hoshiarpur (November 26, 2009): The Dal Khalsa will be holding a Panthic assembly to do “postmortem” of SGPC’s performance at Gurdwara Guru Teg Bahadur, Jalandhar on Dec 3. Addressing a press conference party president H S Dhami said since the 5 year tenure of the present house of the SGPC has been completed and the elections to the general house was expected any moment, the critical evaluation of the performance of the Sikh premier institution was need of the hour.
Flanked by party general secretary Dr Manjinder Singh and spokesperson Kanwar Pal Singh, Mr Dhami said the speakers would assess and evaluate the achievements, shortcomings and failures of the SGPC in addressing the basic problems and challenges faced by the Sikh people. He said during the course of last five years, the SGPC has passed many resolutions and taken many decisions on vital issues. “We will discuss and debate how much have been implemented and how much have been put in the cold storage under pressure or for some other reasons”.
To a question, the leader of the Sikh group said the role and responsibility of the SGPC in implementing edicts by Akal Takht against Sirsa dera and Darbar Sahib Replica would also come under scanner. Listing the issues that would come up for hot discussion, he said it would include framing of procedures and norms for appointment/removal of Takht Jathedars, raising the memorial in memory of June 1984 martyrs, demand to seek Vatican like status for Amritsar & All India Sikh Gurdwara Act and Nanakshahi calendar.
He admitted that since its inception the SGPC has contributed in many fields. Still, it has failed to live up to the expectations of the Sikh Nation. He alleged that invariably due to incompetence and complicity of the SGPC leadership with the successive central governments, the elections have always been delayed. “To make the elections mandatory after every five years, the Sikh Gurdwara Act, 1925 has to be amended and for that purpose, we would submit the memo to Union Home Minister as well as Sikh Gurdwara Election Commissioner”.
To a question, he criticized SAD (Badal) for having two separate Constitutions to deceive the voters. He said apart for analyzing the past performance, the speakers would dwell upon how to improve dwindling image of the institution and make it more effective and result-oriented. He said heads of all Sikh political parties and religious institutions including SGPC president would be invited.
