Amritsar: Terming the hanging of Mumbai blast accused Yakub Memon as very disturbing development, Dal Khalsa slams Indian state for being arrogant and not listening to sane voices of reasoning and instead continuing with its capital punishment.
Dal Khalsa leader Kanwar Pal Singh condemns the Indian government for hanging Yakub Memon at Nagpur jail today despite repeated pleas by eminent personalities of the civil society ‘not to hang him’.
Had the India decided not to execute him, it would have been befitting and ultimate tribute to former president APJ Abdul Kalam on his death, he observed. He said Janab Kalam was opposed to death penalty as he was on record saying “can’t take away life that God gave”. It’s cruel joke that the day Abdul Kalam has been laid to rest, the Indian state has sent Memon to gallows.
He reaffirmed that Dal Khalsa was against death penalty in principle irrespective of the person and the crime he has committed. We feel capital punishment serves no deterrent, as statistics worldwide show and on the contrary brutalizes society.
Accusing India for adopting double standards, he questioned as why the state was silent in executing those who killed thousands of innocent Muslims in Gujarat, Sikhs in Delhi, Christians in Orissa and demolished Babri Masjid.
