Detention Number in UP Exceeds GoI’s Official Figure for Detentions in Kashmir

Chandigarh: The state of Uttar Pradesh (UP) is facing biggest police crackdown since Muzaffar Nagar violence of 2013. The UP police on Thursday (Dec. 26) said that it has arrested 1,113 people while placing another 5,558 in preventive detention. The police said that it has registered 327 cases so far.

The figure of preventive detentions in UP, as disclosed by the police itself, exceeds the figure for preventive detentions in Kashmir valley. Minister of State (Home) G Kishan Reddy had disclosed on November 19 that 5,161 people were detained in Kashmir in wake of abrogation of Article 370 on August 5.

19 Deaths So Far:

As per reports the death toll in protests against the new citizenship law has reached to 19 in Uttar Pradesh.

Officials said the 19 dead were from Firozabad (6), Meerut (4), Kanpur (3), Sambhal (2), Bijnor (2), Lucknow (1) and Varanasi (1).

An official statement maintained that 288 policemen were injured in the violence, 61 with gunshot injuries.

93 Cases, 124 Arrests Over Social Media Posts:

As many as 124 people have reportedly been arrested from across Uttar Pradesh in connection with 93 cases lodged posts on Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. Officials said that a total number of 19,409 ‘objectionable’ posts were detected and action initiated.

Internet Suspended:

On Thursday the authorities suspended internet services in Meerut, Ghaziabad, Muzaffarnagar, Bulandshahr, Shamli and Agra.

High Alert to Police for Friday: 

Media reports say that the police is placed on High Alert across all districts in Uttar Pradesh (UP) as authorities are apprehensive that protests may break out after Friday Namaz.

372 Notices of Confiscation of Property:

Officials said notices have been issued to 372 people, allegedly involved in acts of violence resulting in damage of public property, for recovery through attachment of their properties. Majority notices have been issued in Moradabad, Lucknow, Firozabad and Gorakhpur.

Notices Illegal, Says Former SC Judge:

Former Supreme Court of India judge Markandey Katju said that notices served to people in Uttar Pradesh regarding confiscation of property were illegal. He said that there was no provision in the law which provides for issuance of such notices.

State Unleashing ‘Reign of terror’ in UP, say Activists:

In the New Delhi, a group of activists on Thursday released a fact-finding report on the violence in Uttar Pradesh, accusing the state government of “employing unlawful and lethal tactics” on protesters.

“For the last one week, Uttar Pradesh is under a reign of terror,” said the report, which followed a visit by the activists to the most affected areas of the tense state.

People Have Been Shot in the Head:

“People have been shot in the head, in the chest and one person in the back. This clearly shows the police did not fire in self-defence or to control a restive crowd but to kill and create terror,” activist Kavita Krishnan
