Chandigarh: ‘Sath’ a Panjab University based students group on 6th February, 2018 organised a special seminar on on ‘Punjab Agrarian Crisis’ at Panjab University Chandigarh. In this seminar a lecture on the current declining trend in state’s agriculture,economy, farmer-laborer debts, damage to the environment and dying fertility of the land and way to rejuvenate or reverse the trend was delivered.
Dr. Gian Singh, a former professor at Economics department of Punjabi University Patiala, was invited as main speaker at this discussion organized by Panjab University’s newly formed student organization ‘Sath’.
Whilst sharing his view on the prevalent crises Dr. Gian Singh said that the agrarian crisis can’t be confined to the farmers alone and it should also include farm laborers and rural artisans. He said that this is a multi-dimensional crisis and can’t be solved without the political will power .Talking about the various solutions, he added that all sections of the farming community should be provided minimum assured income so that they can have access to basic facilities such as health, education, social security etc.
