July 17, 2024 | By

Khanuri/Shambu: Since February 13, farmers have been stationed at the Khanuri and Shambu borders of Punjab, demanding a passage to Delhi. This protest is being led by the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha.

Decisions Made in Recent Meetings

On Tuesday (July 16) the leadership of both forums convened for a joint meeting. The meeting was followed by a press conference convened by Farmers Protest leadership at Kisan Bhawan in Chandigarh sharing their future strategy. Following the recent ruling from the Punjab Haryana High Court, the leaders announced that farmers would proceed to Delhi once the borders were officially opened.

During the press conference, an announcement was made regarding a joint conference of the SKM (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, which is scheduled to take place at the Constitutional Club in New Delhi on July 22. This gathering aims to unite farmers across India and discuss future strategies.

Additionally, the farmer leaders revealed plans for an India-level “Kisan Maha Panchayat” set to occur in Haryana on September 15. This event is expected to draw participation from lakhs of farmers, further strengthening the collective voice of the agrarian community, they said.

Ongoing Challenges at the Borders

The atmosphere at the Khanuri and Shambu borders remains tense but peaceful as farmers continue to demonstrate peacefully. Alongside these main fronts, farmers are also gathered at the Dubwali border, highlighting the widespread nature of their struggle. The farmers’ determination is unwavering, despite the challenges posed by the rainy season.

Standoff at Dabwali

After the Punjab Haryana High Court directed the Haryana government to open the borders, farmers stationed at the Dabwali front expressed their desire to relocate their tractor trolleys to the Khanuri border. However, their path was obstructed by large stones placed by authorities, leading to heightened tensions between the farmers and the Haryana police. Despite explaining their intentions, the farmers were met with resistance from law enforcement officials, who did not permit them to advance.

The farmers are now awaiting action from the Haryana government to comply with the High Court’s order and reopen the roads.

The Call for Unity and Action

Farmer leaders emphasized the importance of solidarity during the press conference, urging farmers from all states to join their cause. They reiterated that the movement is not merely about immediate issues but represents a broader fight for farmers’ rights, agricultural sustainability, and economic justice.

The leaders expressed their frustrations over the ongoing blockade and the government’s alleged failure to engage in meaningful dialogue.
