Chandigarh/ Punjab (March 03, 2014): In fresh trouble for the controversial head of Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda (DSS), Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who is facing charges of forced castration of his followers inside the dera, the Haryana government on Friday (Feb. 28) confirmed that his seven former associates were castrated.
According to Times of India (TOI): [i]n a report submitted before the Punjab and Haryana high court on Friday, the state government said it has recorded the statements of seven people associated with the dera chief, in which all of them have confirmed that they were castrated.
However, the state has reportedly informed the HC that these people have denied the role of Rahim Singh in their castration and stated that they underwent the procedure voluntarily.
According to TOI: [t]he statement of these people has confirmed that the allegations of castration of dera followers raised by former member of dera Hansraj Chauhan, who had filed the petition before the HC.
In his petition, Hansraj Chauhan had claimed that he, along with around 400 sadhus of the dera, were allegedly castrated inside the dera with false hope that the men who would get castrated would be able to reach God through the sect head.
On February 4 hearing, Hansraj Chauhan had named seven people who were allegedly castrated inside dera. Hearing this, the HC had asked the Haryana government to record the statements of these people.
Meanwhile, the dera head also filed a detailed reply before the HC on Friday stating that the allegations of castration against him were baseless and the petitioner should have approach the local police instead of approaching the court. He has also questioned the petitioner for approaching the court after 12 years of the incident.
Taking cognizance of the main petition, the HC had earlier ordered to conduct medical examination of Chuahan at the government multi-specialty hospital (GMSH) Sector-16 Chandigarh. The GMSH authorities examined Chauhan and found that he was castrated.
