German President had talked to Indan PM regarding Prof. Bhullar after SCI upheld his death penalty

April 24, 2013 | By

Ludhiana, Punjab (April 24, 2013): It is learnt that German President Joachim Gauck spoke to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to plead against Sikh political prisoner Professor Devender Pal Singh Bhullar’s case on April 12, 2013, the day when the Supreme Court of India cleared the execution of Prof. Bhullar.

This has been revealed by German Ambassador to Canada Werner Wnendt in a reply to World Sikh Organisation of Canada (WSO), which – on the grounds that the case had a Canadian connection as well for Bhullar’s wife Navneet Kaur was a Canadian citizen – took up the case of Bhullar with Wnendt seeking Germany’s intervention to get the execution of Bhullar stopped.

“Germany has followed the case of Prof. Bhullar closely and has asked India on a number of occasions to relief him from the death penalty on humanitarian reasons. On April 12, 2013, the same day the Supreme Court of India has refused to relief Prof. Bhullar from the death penalty, the Federal President, Joachim Gauck, has talked to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in order to plead his case,” Wnendt has said in his reply to WSO.

“The government of the Federal Republic of Germany is strongly against the death penalty and has encouraged the government of the Republic of India on numerous occasions to return to the moratorium on the death penalty,” he said.

Wnendt also maintained, “Germany will continue to talk to India on the highest level about this (Bhullar) case.”

It is notable that Prof. Devender Pal Singh Bhullar, former teacher of Mechanical Engineering at Guru Nanak Engineering College, Ludhiana was one of the brilliant brains of the Sikh movement of 1980s-90s, who led the movement at intellectual as well as organizational levels.

He was sentenced to death solely on a fractured confessional statement that was found not admissible in evidence by Supreme Court bench’s Presiding judge Justice M. B. Shah in his minority judgement.

His death sentence was confirmed by Supreme of India in a split judgement.

Legally his case had strong merits, and even the public prosecutor who pleaded against Prof. Bhullar in Supreme Court of India said that it was “most inappropriate” and “judicial error” for SCI to confirm the death sentence of Prof. Bhullar.

But still Indian state seems committed to execute Prof. DPS Bhullar for political reasons. Sikh circles are terming his suspected execution as political execution.
