June 3, 2015 | By

Amritsar, Punjab: Governing Council of Khalsa College has reportedly appointed a five member committee to dig into the possibilities of getting Khalsa College enlisted in UNESCO heritage list. The five member committee comprises Dr. JS Brar, Dr. Mehal Singh, Dr. JS Dhillon, and DS Rataul lead by Dr. HS Soch (former Vice Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University).

DS Rataul said that primarily the committee would go through the standards to be maintained for enlisting the Khalsa College in heritage list of UNESCO. ‘The committee will decide upon how to prepare dossier to put forth their claim’ he added.

The committee has exhibited the 80 years old British Clock, a museum with 115 Artifacts (Ancient Weapons, lithographs, paintings of Maharaja Ranjit Singh etc.) of Sikh history as key features for claiming place in heritage list of UNESCO.

The library of the college contains rare manuscripts of ‘Nanak Parkash’ beside 6300 books of historical importance.

In an apparently controversial statement Honorary Secretary of Khalsa College Governing Council in said: “The Khalsa College Building is an exceptional architectural and historical marvel with fusion of traditional Indian and Mughal style of architecture.”

The statement has drawn strong reactions from experts. Er. Inderbir Singh Ahluwalia says that labelling architecture of Khalsa College as fusion of Indian and Mughal architecture would be incorrect and misleading.

“Khalsa College is one of the examples of Sikh Architecture and the Sikh Architecture is unique in itself” he said.

‘At the most it can be said that Sikh Architecture is inspired from other contemporary architect, but terming the Khalsa College building as fusion of Indian and Mughal architecture would be incorrect’ he added.
