Jalandhar: Re-asserting that Guru Teg Bahadur was in fact “dharam di chadar” (cover for religion), and not “Hind-di-chadar” (cover for Hindu), the Sikh Youth of Punjab (SYP) said the Guru embraced martyrdom to protect the oppressed class irrespective of their religion and caste.
As per original Nanakshahi calendar adopted in March 2003, the martyrdom day of Ninth Master falls on Nov 24. SYP, which is youth wing of the Dal Khalsa sticks to original calendar and rejects the amended version adopted by SGPC under pressure from Sant Samaj.
Observing the Ninth Guru’s martyrdom day, SYP president Paramjit Singh Tanda while speaking at gurdwara in village Kalra near Adampur said Sikh Diaspora in particular and citizens of India in general should observe the martyrdom day of Guru Teg Bahadur as ‘Human Rights and Religious Freedom’ day. The function was organized by local zone of Sikh Missionary College.
“Guru Teg Bahadur is undisputedly the first martyr for religious freedom & human rights, he said. “Guru’s martyrdom was unparalleled in world history as never before somebody had laid down life to defend the right of followers of another faith to practice their faith”.
