Joint Meeting of SKM (apolitical) and KMM To Decide Future Course of Ongoing Farmers Protest

July 16, 2024 | By

Rajpura: Farmers from Punjab have been camping at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders since February 13, 2024, demanding a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Prices (MSP) and the implementation of the C2+50% formula as recommended by the Swaminathan Commission. The farmers, organized under the banner of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), are pressing the central government to address their concerns regarding fair prices for agricultural produce.

In recent developments, the Haryana government has erected heavy barricades to prevent farmers from advancing towards Delhi. However, the Punjab and Haryana High Court recently directed the state government to remove these barricades, citing the farmers’ right to peaceful protest. In response, the Haryana government has moved to the Supreme Court, challenging the High Court’s order.

As tensions mount, the SKM has remained resolute in its decision to march to Delhi. A crucial joint meeting is scheduled for July 15, where leaders from SKM and KKM will deliberate on their future course of action. The outcome of this meeting will significantly influence the farmers’ strategy, especially in light of the ongoing legal battles and the potential for escalation in their protest.

Meanwhile, Haryana police have reportedly transformed their temporary camps into makeshift sheds, reflecting the prolonged nature of the standoff. The farmers are determined to highlight their plight and secure fair pricing for their crops, calling for solidarity from across the nation as they prepare for potential further action. The situation remains fluid, with all eyes on the farmers’ meeting and the Supreme Court’s decision on the barricading issue.
