Karachi, Pakistan (August 12, 2014): The Karachi-based Pakistan Sikh Council (PSC) has condemned the attack on the Sikh community in Peshawar and demanded a high-level investigation into the incident.

Speaking to Pak Daily, The News, PSC patron-in-chief Sardar Ramesh Singh said the Sikhs of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) had been living in peace for centuries.

However, the attacks on the community in the past several months show that certain elements are bent on disturbing peaceful coexistence among various religious and ethnic communities in the region.

“This is not the first time our community was attacked in KP,” said Singh. “The Sikh community in the province is under constant threat … many Sikh families have left the area over lack of security.”

According to the police, one Sikh man was killed and two others injured when unidentified men on a motorcycle opened fired at them in the Hashtnagri area of Peshawar.

Jagmohan Singh died on the way to the hospital, while two others were admitted at the Lady Reading Hospital. At the time of the incident, the three victims were at their cosmetics shop.

The PSC patron-in-chief said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led KP government should provide security not only to Sikhs but also to other religious minorities in the province.

“Issuing statements and forming committees won’t do. The PTI government should come up with results or else the PSC would launch a protest campaign in Sindh.”

The Sikh community is the third largest religious minority group in Pakistan after Hindus and Christians. KP has a sizeable number of Sikhs, second only to Punjab.
