Pro-Hindtuva group forcibly take over Gurdwara rooms in Kishtwar (J&K); Granthi thrashed, belongings thrown out

Jammu and Kashmir: Members of a pro-Hindutva group called Brahmin Sabha reportedly broke into some rooms in a Sarai belonging to Gurdwara Singh Sabha in Kishtwar area of Jammu and Kashmir. The activist of Brahmin Sabha also threatened family members of Gurdwara Sewadar Bhai Shadi Singh and forcibly removed their belongings from some rooms. The material, including some religious articles were thrown out of rooms. The incident reportedly took place on April 30, 2015.

Local Sikh bodies have also expressed their anger over the incident demanding swift action against the culprits. Local sources told Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) that Tarlochan Singh Wazir held a press conference at the Press Club of Jammu yesterday. He demanded strict action against culprits involved in violence at Gurdwara Sahib.
SSP of Kishtwar has assured local Sikh representatives that the police will take appropriate action against the accused.
While addressing the press conference Tarlochan Singh Wazir said that violent acts were committed against the Gurdwara Sahib and Gurdwara Sewadars in past years also. He said that a case was filed against one Chander Kant who had earlier tried to create trouble at the Gurdwara Sahib but no action was taken against him by the police or the administration. “Present incident is result of police inaction in previous case”, he said.
The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC) yesterday (on May 01) issued a statement strongly condemning the incident. SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar reportedly talked to Jammu and Kashmir DGP and Kishtwar Deputy Commissioner over telephone. SGPC president said that a dispute relating to the Gurdwara property was pending in a local court. He said that it was also a contempt of court that the accused tried to break in the Gurdwara property while the case is still pending in the court.
While speaking to the Deputy Commissioner he said, “such acts can cause tensions in Kishtawar among communities and peace and harmony must be maintained and those who took over the Gurdwara should hand it back to the Gurdwara Committee immediately with the strictest charges brought against them.”
The Gurdwara Sahib has been under the control of Sikhs for over 90 Years.
