PU Chandigarh Suspended 8 Students for Demanding Implementation of Punjab Reservation Policy

May 3, 2024 | By

Chandigarh: The Punjab University administration has suspended eight students, seven of whom are affiliated with the Sath organization. Sath is a students’ body active in the Panjab university campus for past few years.

Among those suspended are Gurvinder Singh, the campus unit president, and Darshpreet Singh, the vice-president. One student affiliated by Students for Society (SFS) is also suspended.

The students were reportedly engaged in a peaceful demonstration, advocating for the implementation of Punjab quota in the recruitment process for university staff and employees.

Sources suggest that the decision to suspend the students came directly from the university’s vice chancellor, Renu Wig, herself. This action, notably taken just ahead of examinations, has sparked controversy and drawn criticism from various quarters.

Responding to the suspension, a representative of the Sath organization conveyed their dismay to Sikh Siyasat News, indicating that they are exploring various avenues, including legal recourse, to challenge the university administration’s decision.

The move has ignited debate within various quarters in the university campus, with many questioning the administration’s handling of the situation and expressing solidarity with the suspended students. Calls for implementation of Punjab quota have intensified in the wake of these events.
