Punjab Assembly By-election: Polling for Shahkot on May 28; Result on 31 May

Chandigarh: The date for by-election for Shahkot constituency in Punjab was declared today by the Election Commission of India (ECI). The polling for Shahkot seat, that had fell vacant after the demise of SAD (Badal) MLA Ajit Singh Kohar, will be held on May 28 and the result will be announced on May 31.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced dates for by-elections to be held on various Lok Sabha and State assembly seats in various states.

In a press note issued today (April 26, 2018), the ECI announced by election schedule for 4 Lok Sabha seats, namely Bhandara-Gondiya (11, Maharashtra), Palghar (22, ST, Maharashtra), Nanaland (Nagaland) and Kairana (2, Uttar Pradesh).

The ECI has also announced schedule for by elections on ten assembly seats in different states, including Jokihat (50, Bihar), Goima (34, Jharkhand), Silli (61, Jharkhand), Chengannur (110, Kerala), Palus Kadegaon (285, Maharashtra), Ampati (53, ST, Meghalaya), Shahkot (32, Punjab), Tharali (05, SC, Uttarakhand), Noorpur (24, Uttar Pradesh) and Maheshtala (155, West Bengal).

The Gazette Notification for these elections will be issued on May 3 and last date for filing nomination papers is on May 10. The scrutiny of nominations will be held on May 11 and last date for withdrawal of candidatures is May 14. Date of polling is May 28 and counting of votes will be held on May 31.

A statement issued by Punjab CM’s Office says that with the announcement of bye election for Shahkot Vidhan Sabha constituency model code of conduct is enforced in Jalandhar district with immediate effect.
