Chandigarh, Punjab (February 09, 2013): According to media reports as the uncertainty looms large over the fate of the Director General of Punjab Police Sumedh Saini after the Punjab and Haryana High Court reserved the order on a petition challenging his appointment, many of his senior colleagues in the state police force have begun eyeing the top post in case the court decision goes against him’.
It is notable that the High Court has reserved its judgement on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging the appointment of Saini as DGP as he was facing criminal charges in courts, including charges of abduction and murder.
According to a Punjab News Line (PNL) report the High Court decision can go either way but this has not prevented the senior-most officers in the police from aspiring from the post.
It is notable that the High court had dismissed the PIL field by Voices for Freedom for technical reason – i.e. lack of locus standi. But the court had taken suo motto notice of the matter and appointed two amicus curie to follow the case since it felt the matter was of public importance.
It is notable that the arguments in this matter concluded on February 04, 2013 with the state government strongly defending his appointment of Saini as DGP.
The Advocate General of Punjab Governemnt maintained that Saini had not been convicted but only charge-sheeted so far and it did not require his removal from the current post.
“While the court is yet to announce its orders, it has led to an uncertainty in the police establishment in case of an adverse order against the DGP” adds PNL report.
“Even though the removal or replacement of the DGP appears to be a remote possibility as of now, the concluding of the arguments has already led to lot of aspirations among a section of officers aspiring to occupy the top job” it reads further.
Sumedh Saini, who enjoys political and state patronage, was appointed as DGP of Punjab by Badal led Punjab government despite that fact that he was facing multiple criminal charges for abduction and murder.
