Sangrur, Punjab: Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) has announced Gobind Singh Longowal as party candidate for Dhuri by-poll. Party’s secretary general Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa said that there was a wave in favor of ruling Badal-BJP coalition in Dhuri constituency.
Gobind Singh Longowal is expected file his nomination papers on 23 March.
The Congress party has also announced it’s candidate for Dhuri by-polls. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has decided not to contest this election.
Dhuri’s election officer Rajesh Dhiman told media that the nomination papers could be filed till 24 March. He said that 27 March would be the last date to withdraw nominations. Polling will be held on 11 April while the votes will be counted on 15 April.
The seat had fell vacant after resignation of Congress MLA Arvind Khanna in January. Arvind Khanna, a close associate of former Punjab chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh, also quit the party and announced that he had left active politics. The bypoll has to be conducted within six months of the seat falling vacant.
