Chandigarh: As per the media reports Prof Kirpal Singh Badungar chief of Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has shot off a letter to Punjab Governor cum UT Administrator V P Badnore asking him to implement Punjabi as a first language in Chandigarh.
Conveying the governor about the discriminatory treatment meet out to Punjabi language in Chandigarh, Prof. Badungar has written in the letter that the Punjabi language was one among 22 languages recognized in the Indian constitution so he should implement mother-tongue Punjabi as first language in Chandigarh.
While interacting with the local media outlet Prof. Badungar said that he was worried that many private schools in Chandigarh do not start teaching Punjabi until students are in later grades. He said that many places in Chandigarh also do not have signs in Punjabi, which makes it hard for Punjabi speaking natives of Chandigarh to commute.
“We are hoping that the Punjab Governor will consider our demand and recognize the need to implement Punjabi as the first language of Chandigarh,” he further adds.
