Washington, DC (March 25, 2014): The Sikh Coalition has invited applications for its fourth Sikh Advocate Academy. The Academy is led by experienced social justice advocates and features guest speakers from government agencies, media outlets and civil rights organizations.
According to a newsletter this intensive, week-long workshop between June 8th and 14th, 2014 in Washington, DC will train approximately 10 individuals on the same advocacy techniques used by the Sikh Coalition to achieve justice.
“Successful applicants will have all expenses paid for their training, including meals, travel and hotel accommodations, as well as an opportunity to visit Congressional offices on Capitol Hill. In return for the training, Sikh Coalition Advocates must agree to initiate advocacy efforts in their local communities”, the newsletter by the Sikh Coalition dated March 24, 2014 reads further.
According to the newsletter “[a]fter receiving training, support and inspiration at the Academy, the Sikh Coalition Advocates have: organized grassroots surveys of hundreds of Sikh youth to help address school bullying in Arizona, California, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia; engaged with over 35 media outlets nationwide to create Sikh awareness and appreciation among thousands of Americans; and developed working relationships with Congressional offices that yielded Congressional support for Sikh hate crime tracking, TSA accountability and for equal opportunity for Sikhs in the U.S. Armed Forces”.
