Sikh Youth Activist Gurpeet Singh Hari Nau Shot Dead in Hari Nau (Faridkot)

Faridkot: Gurpeet Singh Hari Nau, a prominent youth activist, was shot dead by two unidentified assailants on motorcycles while returning to his village. The incident occurred yesterday (9 Oct) evening, and reports indicate that Gurpeet Singh Hari Nau was struck by three bullets in the chest.

He was rushed to Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital, where he was pronounced brought dead by doctors. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pragya Jain said that an investigation is underway. “We are trying to identify the accused and trace them,” SSP Pragya Jain stated.

Gurpeet Singh Hari Nau was known for his active participation in protests following the 2015 Bargari Beadbi incident and the police firing at Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan. He was a member of the Waris Punjab De organization, which was founded by the late actor and activist Deep Sidhu. Following Deep Sidhu’s death in February 2022, Amritpal Singh took over the leadership fo the group, and Gurpeet Singh Hari Nau was a close associate. Although he reportedly distanced himself from Amritpal Singh last year, but he remained active on social media and continued his involvement in local issues.

Gurpeet Singh Hari Nau was also active during Behbal Kalan morcha led by Sukhraj Singh Niamiwala. As per a The Tribune (TT) report Sukhraj Singh Niamiwala said that Gurpreet Singh Hari Nau  was his key supporter.

The body of Gurpeet Singh Hari Nau has been retained at the medical college for post-mortem examination.

Notably, Palwinder Singh Talwara, another key member of the Waris Punjab De group founded by Deep Sidhu has claimed that his life was under threat. Palwinder Singh Talwara in a media interview in July 2024 said that multiple people, including himself, who are active in Sikh sphere in Punjab is under life threat.
